It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Vernon E. Higgins of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, born in Irwin, Pennsylvania, who passed away on October 26, 2021, at the age of 71, leaving to mourn family and friends. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family. You may also light a candle in honor of Vernon E. Higgins or send a beautiful flower arrangement to the funeral service.
He was predeceased by : his parents, Eugene Higgins and Eleanor Higgins (Dunlap); and his sisters, Vivian Ruffner and Beverly McNeal. He is survived by : his wife Linda Higgins (Moschetti); his sons, Jeff Higgins (Jessica) and Scott Higgins; and his grandchildren, Cole and Alexa Higgins. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Vernon Higgins ! Vern and I were best friends growing up through our early teenage years until we graduated and sadly went our separate ways. We lived fairly close out in Strawpump (about as close to one another as one could get in Strawpump) plenty of room between homes back in those days. We did everything in my mind and memory together basically every day. We fished, hunted, worked, rough housed, sports, rode bicycle, ate, got into trouble (parents) just about anything you can imagine and then some. Absolutely the best and most informative years of my life. Vern was an amazing friend, of course, I didn't actually realize it at the time. Sadly for no other reason than circumstances at the time we both went into the military ( different branches) and from there it was history. We lost contact with each other and as I guess as fate would have it I just kept procrastinating for what ever stupid reason for the perfect time to reconnect and keep in touch with the one guy I couldn't stand to be very far from. Well the perfect time is here now and I have no choice other than to wait to meet up with my best buddy in our next life or wherever fate and faith leads us this time. So for now "lil buddy" I'm praying for you and your family and other loved ones. God rest your soul RIP.

Tom what a great memory you have in your heart about your friend Vernon. Like all of us we do procrastinate thinking we have all the time in the world to do the things we know we should be doing. When I read about all the classmates we have lost over the years it's a great reminder to love the ones that we hold dear to our hearts and reach out to others more. May God be with his family during this difficult time and pray for all our classmates the ones gone too soon and all the ones that are still fortunate to be here.

When I was doing research to find classmates for the last reunion, I found an obit for our other classmate, Vernon's sister, Vivian Higgins Ruffner. For some reason there wasn't enough info to officially post it at that time. She passed away in 2014. I knew they were related, but didn't realize that they were brother and sister.

Wow! Vern and Vivian lived down the hill from my house, and I walked home every day from the bus with Vivian. I knew Tom Hice was friends with him, but I am touched to hear how close you guys really were. I had been down to the Higgins' house to visit on several occasions, and Vern used to walk up to my house to play records in our family room. I ran into him once after we graduated, at Hardy's Pub, I think. I had always wondered what they both were doing these days, but had no idea how to find them, as I'm not that involved with social media. I had hoped that one or both of them would show up at our next reunion. When I found out about Vern's passing, I tried to see if I could get to the viewing, but It was held the day before I contaced the funeral home. I would have gone if I had not been too late. I'm so very sad to hear that 2 more of our classmates are gone.
